Today, we attempted to clarify contemporary notions of race ("the racial chameleon") by outlining a spectrum of racial sentiment: RACISM < ANIMOSITY < AMBIVALENCE < COMITY. While Entman and Rojecki correctly categorize contemporary racial sentiment as predominantly AMBIVALENT, the circumstances generating ambivalence are numerous. To adequately account for today's racial climate, a more varied and detailed spectrum is needed. IGNORANCE, SEGREGATION, ASSIMILATION and HARMONY are just a few of the necessary (sub)categories.

The media report on crimes, showing images that viewers then associate with crime.
The media report on crimes without showing images. Viewers have in mind the images shown previously.
When viewers later think about crimes, they look for indications that support their conception of crime, which was formed by what they saw in the media reports.
For example, the cartoon show Boondocks presenting the message that Martin Luther King left behind to his people so that they come out of an enpovirrege estate of mind that this system had created for centuries to his people and that they had the same rights to prosper in this world , because he knew that all mankind was created in the same image of God, so all man was created equal with the same rights and privileges that comes with it.

When I listened to the audio on Hattie Mc Daniel, I did so with fondness. I have watched "Gone With the Wind" many times in my life and Mammie was always such an endearing woman to me. Humble and kind. Caring and empathic. Beside the obvious racial stereotype of a black woman of that time, Hattie's role mirrored what they do with every stereotypical situation we see today, including shows like "The Sopranos". I know that Ms.Mc Daniel's role is one that she and other black actors are forced into taking if they want to be in the movie industry. I feel that progress has absolutely been moving at a snail's pace when it comes to acceptance of anyone other that caucasians. We need to speed it up. It's the 21st Century!! TL
My reaction to the cartoon clip All This and Rabbit Stew was not a good one. I grew up watching Bugs Bunny cartoon and have always laughed and loved watching it. But this particular cartoon was just not funny at all. The cartoon portrayed the black character as being lazy, stupid, big lips and he didn't talk proper. Personally I think the clip should be banned for good.
I have choosen to write my response on the cartoon called, "Scrub Me Ma Ma With A Boogie Beat." The representation of the Black female was either they were big,dark skinned, and fat or of a lighter complextion and loose sexually. The black males were depicted as being silly, lazy, or singing and dancing with no worries. I would definitly take this as truth about blacks, (if I were apart of the ambivalent majority)because everyone looks happy doing what they are doing.
I believe that this clip should be presented as offensive. People who have no interaction with blacks will remain ignorant. The black community as well as those who know better understand that blacks are capable of being successful without cooking, singing and dancing, or flirting with men in order to survive.

The media clip of "Jungle Jitters" represent the villagers as being savages and cannablistic animals. A white dog face salesman comes to their village to sell products. The villagers were protrayed as stealing and unintelligent people.
The queen was shown as a white duck face woman that wanted to marry the salesman, but to no avail. He rather be cooked in the pot and eaten by the villagers.
This was really interesting to know that cartoons were shown in movies, theaters, or televison sending messeges about African-American people.

I viewed the “Racist” Bugs Bunny cartoon, as always black as tar, big red lips, big feet and stupid with no sense of directions. I watched Bugs Bunny as a child but this one made me take notice that even today the same is still happening. As he keeps on running and running and finds himself into the wrong hole. The Rabbit lead him to the edge and watch him struggled to survive. When he’s cautious, he still doesn’t know if he should trust himself. I chose to write my response on the cartoon "Scrub Me Ma Ma With A Boogie Beat". It grasped my attention to see how they depicted African American people as being blacker than a ace of spade with big pink lips. When in actually we come in all different shades, not just one.I was also appauled to see them portray us as being dumb and clueless with the resemblence of a monkey. It was just very upsetting and I'm glad it was banned and hope it stays that way.
Flims and media play an integral roles in misrepresenting race. African American are potrayed as comedians. After watching Jungle Jitter, the characters in the cartoon are typecast as cannibals and uncivilized. Although it's gotten better, there is still room for improvement.

I FEEL THAT THIS STRIP SHOULD BE PRESERVED SO THAT FUTURE STUDENTS LEARNING ABOUT MEDIA CAN COMPARE STEROTYPES THAT WERE DEPICTED 40 YEARS AGO IN FILM & TV. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO JUDGE WHETHER THESE DEPICTIONS STILL HOLD TRUE. THIS IS A GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR THEM.
SINCE RACISM IS INBREDDED INTO PEOPLE VERBALLY AND BY ACTIONS, TODAY'S CHILDREN 7 & UNDER WILL NOT DEPICT THIS STRIP AS RACISM. JUST COMICAL DUE TO FEATURES & MUSIC IT PORTRAYS. OLDER GENERATION WILL EXPLAIN TO THEM THE STRIDE THEY HAD TO ACHIEVE TO ERASE THESE DEPICTIONS.

I viewed the clips presented on this blog and wasn't a bit surprised the way African Americans were viewed. African-Americans were depicted on film as having a very dark complextion, pink lips, lazy, ignorant, etc. The Bugs Bunny cartoon reflects back to slavery where the whites controlled the blacks. Racism is still lurking in the media but not as opened as these clips.

"Scrub Me Mama With A Boogie Beat" debuted in 1941. This cartoon portrays a very harmful stereotype about African American. The scenes described a black man eating a slice of watermelon, a black baby wearing a diaper made from flour and African Americans are indicated as being lazy and only function by jazz music. African Americans in this hcartoon had big wide lips, big feet, always snoring and they were dark as tar.
My opinion I think this cartoon should be banned. The cartoon picture is a vicious caricature of the African American lives.

Accoriding to Wikpedia, Blackness is the degree to which and individual, regardless of their background, is sympathetic to or a part of the mainstream thoughts of the African-American community. (one who loses to much of their "blackness" may be thought of as having their black card revoked or losing ("black points".)
The concept of "blackness" as it has come to be undertood, is rapidly losing its ability to describe. such as the political and social behavior of Black Americans.

i found the cartoon on scub me mama with boogie beat to be very racist. it potrayed african americans with being blacker than black with big pink lips.also it potrayed african americans as being lazy. all africans americans aren't that way we as a african americans have beautiful full lips and for this cartoon to potray them otherwise should have been banned and needs to stay banned.
i watched many of the clips i didn't find them funny, as you see in each all blacks were portrayed the same very dark skined, big wide lips, lazy, and non caring. Each cartoon may have had some type of racism in them but in those days people didn't realize they were being portrayed in a racist manner, they just took it as amusement. In all the carttons it didn't just potrayed blacks it portrayed other ethnic groupsas well and tha makes racism awful at all cost of human beings. I remembered watching many of these cartoons and never thought about them as racist, as you look at them today you see the difference in how people was portrayed in those days. they are banned today but if you don't have something to look back at to understand what people of color went through then you don't learn and understand the difference of how people overcame struggles in life about racism.

The media example I selected was Jungle Jitters. This clip showed Africans as savages living in the jungle away from civilization. the Africans were shown as living in poor conditions. The Africans in the cartoon were extremely dark in complexion. They all had big pink lips, lived in huts, with bones going through their heads or noses. The African tribe was shown as being "stupid." The clip showed a Caucasian dog was protrayed as the salesman. The salesman came to the village to sell appliances to the African people who have never seen or heard of these items. The Africans had a "Queen" who was protrayed as a Caucasian duck who had the "Hots" for the salesman. This piece would alter a persons understanding because it tells you that if you are of black skin color you ar a lower class then any Caucasian person or animal. It also shows that an African could not rule a tribe but has to be ruled under Caucasian leadership. This clip is very racist. I believe this should be banned because it is very offensive. This clip, if continued to be shown, it will just add "fuel" to what the media has been stereotyping Africans and African-American people for thousands of years. It is time to make a change.

"Scrub me mama with a boogie beat", should be banned. I don't think this should be preserved. In order for people to move on you should remove things that gives negative impressions for future generations. To see the images of big lips and feet was just disturbing and to see the fat lady bend over at the end of the clip. The real stereotype is a fine dress woman, who came in to Lazy town Landing and cause chaos by teaching mama how to scrub. Watching the "Rabbit Stew" clip was not funny to me. I did like the images which black people portray. It's like they did anything for money. These clips always show the negative side of Black people or how they look! Wanda G.

I wrote this before. It must have gotten lost. I didn't look @ this cartoon to be racist but it did portray the cartoon characters in a negative way. The big lips, the lady showing her butt at the end of the movie. I am glad that the cartoons that they show now are much different they are not as sexist.

I saw the clip of Al Johnson. I can see way he was a funny man but I think people were laugh at him and not with him. I feel this way because he looked stupid in his make up. Why did black people have to cover up their skin with black make up if they are black already. This was a way for with people to have a reason the laugh at us. We were so stupid back to realize what was happen. I am glade black people have come a long way. We have won awards that white would have never thought we would have won.

To me Scrub me mamma with a boogie beat is trying to say that black people can only be productive in music only with the help of white people. I also noticed that the town was called lazy town. No one was moving aroud everyone was just sitting around being lazy, all of a sudden the white woman gets of the boat and all of the men are up and jumping aroud, energetic. I am glad that the Betty Boop cartoon was banned because they made the black children look stupid and it upset me. All the other childer were doing dances to thier culture and all the black children where chained together as if they were in a chain gang and also they made the black children look more like animals than humans.

These images should not be hidden because they are our history. It is important to know the depths of hate and racism and what our ancestors had to endure and overcome. It is important for us to realize that if (traditional) slavery has been abolished anything can be changed with time and energy. For example, I am a slave. I am a slave to styles, slangs, New York City, meaningless love, and traditional thoughts. I have seen a glimmer of the person I want to be and I realize that my entire mentality has to be turned upside down in order to achieve true happiness. And as much as I want to be happy, you would say that if you know what you have to do, then do it! And it is because of this personal struggle that my eyes are wide open to the contioned insanity buried within my genes and my skin.

I agree that the cartoon portrays negative black stereotypes. Elmer Fudd protrays negative redneck stereotypes. I think I remember watching this cartoon when I was a kid, and I never associated the people in the cartoon with black people, or real people in general. They were cartoon people, not real people. This was true for most cartoons. But I also wanted to disagree with the people who commented about the baby with a flour sack for a diaper. I think that baby was supposed to represent the unclaimed, bastard white child. On clear prints of the cartoon you can see the population of Lazytown is "123 1/2" people. You will also notice that there is some interracial chicken on chicken dancing going on in the cartoon.
